At the heart of social enterprise and social innovation is the need to combine commercial and social objectives. It is this combination that has been the focus of a growing body of research on hybrid models and organising. While much research has focused on the tensions between social and commercial objectives, research has also found that the ability to combine objectives is one of the core capabilities of any social entrepreneur or social innovator.

At a time where there is an urgent need for innovative solutions to global challenges, Fergus Lyon (Deputy Director of CUSP) will be leading a stream of the International Social Innovation Research Conference (ISIRC). Linking with the CUSP theme of Alternative Organisations, the conference stream will focus on Hybrid Models & Organising where there is a combination of  social, environmental and  commercial objectives fuelling innovation for sustainable development. ISIRC is the world’s leading interdisciplinary social innovation research conference. The conference brings together scholars from across the globe to discuss social innovation from a variety of perspectives and in 2019 will be hosted in Glasgow, from 2-4 September 2019.
