Towards the New Normal

Report Launch
London, 12 March 2018, 11am

Increasing private investment in green infrastructure is a huge opportunity for the UK. It represents a growing market for the professional services industry and is a crucial way of meeting the UK’s strategic and environmental policy objectives cost-effectively, whilst securing more jobs, and other economic targets.

The UK’s infrastructure needs set out in the Industrial and Clean Growth Strategies and 25 Year Environment Plan are significant. The UK will need up to £693bn investment in low carbon infrastructure by 2031 in order to meet its policy ambitions, with $90tn required worldwide in the next 15 years. This infrastructure will have to be green and resilient and will require huge volumes of private investment.

This event marks the launch of the Aldersgate Group’s and CUSP’s latest report, Towards the new normal: increasing investment in green infrastructure. Based on interviews with a wide range of businesses and investors during a year-long research project with CUSP, this report provides an overview of the challenges and opportunities in the UK’s green finance market and suggests key recommendations for government, businesses and investors to unlock the greater volumes of private investment needed to deliver the UK’s green infrastructure.

The event will be chaired by Martin Wolf CBE, Chief Economics Commentator at the Financial Times, and will feature a cross-sector panel of senior business and public sector speakers representing project developers and investors. Panellists will set out their views on the state of the UK’s green finance market and discuss their priorities for government action to increase private investment in green infrastructure.

Panellists:

  • Jane Pilcher, Group Treasurer, Anglian Water
  • Steve Waygood, Chief Responsible Investment Officer, Aviva Investors
  • Emma Howard Boyd, Chair, Environment Agency
  • Gavin Templeton, Head of Sustainable Finance, Green Investment Group
  • Peter Highmore, Lead Transaction Manager – Structured Solutions, Ørsted
